Be aware of meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia symptoms

Meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia can begin with symptoms that look very similar to common viral infections, such as flu or other seasonal viruses. This can make them easy to overlook in the early stages.

However, it’s important to stay alert. Seek urgent medical help immediately if you develop any of the following symptoms, especially if they appear suddenly, get worse quickly, or feel different from a usual viral illness:

  • Fever
  • Severe headache
  • Rapid or difficult breathing
  • Drowsiness or confusion
  • Shivering
  • Vomiting
  • Cold hands and feet
  • A rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass (this may be a sign of septicaemia)

These symptoms don’t always appear together, and not everyone gets the same combination. Trust your instincts—if something feels wrong, get medical help urgently.

What to do

  • If you have symptoms, please contact the Practice
  • If symptoms are severe or getting worse, call 999 immediately.
